Southern Spain is the sunniest place in Europe. Since the 70s, the Almeria region has been progressively covered with plastic greenhouses which have reshaped the arid landscape. On an area of 30000 hectares, 3 millions tons of fruits and vegetables are produced here every year and 80% of the production is shipped all around Europe. But this overproduction comes with social and ecological problems. A large part of the workers are illegal immigrants, poorly paid and without social rights. In this dry area, amounts of water are used to irrigate and fertilisers and pesticides are polluting the groundwater. Tons of plastic waste are created and rarely recycled, often ending up in the nearby sea or buried in the ground.
